The first paper is concerned with a basic assumption in Functional Grammar that there always is a communicative setting in which a speaker somehow wants to influence a listener. This (mistaken) assumption doesn't give room to the situations in which the motivation for a speaker's utterance is not giving information to or persuading a listener, but his desire to create beauty, for the delectation of the listener or solely the speaker himself.

The other (abstracts of) papers are concerned with the achievements in the area of Functional Grammar 'avant la lettre' of a number of missionaries.
